Taking John out by the ROOTS

06 October 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

So I played on the 'Late Night Stars of Irish Poker' show thing on Friday night out in Citywest. For those of you that are not familiar with the tournament basically there are eight heats each comprising of two pro's, two celebrities and two internet qualifiers.

Each heat is shown then on RTE 2 I think on Sunday nights and the winner of each heat goes through to a final eight where they compete for the $50,000 prize pool. I'm not yet aware of the payout structure.

No complaints!!??

Hey guys, as usual it's been a while since my last post. So what's new? Well, since my last update the tennis season has come to a close, which is always welcome since I get quite sick of playing most days and am also liable to start picking up a few niggling injuries towards the end of the season.

My tournament earnings (from tennis) this season consisted of €75 for a quarter-final appearance in Bray and a €150 voucher for a relatively well known sports store in Dun Laoghaire. All in all a strong season for me, but the bank manager says keep at the poker...nit.

Calm after the shit storm

Been home about two weeks now and I'm pleased to say it's been pretty uneventful. I needed a break after the pain of Vegas, and for me a break from poker involves only playing a few hours online a day. It'd be pretty unrealistic to think I could go cold turkey altogether and take a real break.

WSOP Re-cap

19 July 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

With regards to my main event, I busted a couple of hours into day three. I started the day with 130k, while the blinds were at 600-1200-100 and the average stack being about 110k. My table draw for day three was about average, with some good and some okay players; however everything that really could've gone wrong for me, did.

I found a good few big pairs in the blinds or in late position, re-raised with them, got called, the flop came repulsively every time but I usually just C-bet strongly enough and either guys stuck in half there stack or else waited till the river to stick in a sick amount.

Maybe next year.. again

Yet another World Series passes. I only played four events; two PLO ($5k and $10k) and two NLH ($1,5k and $10k Main Event) events. I felt I played more or less my best in all, bar the $5k PLO where I was probably a bit impatient and perhaps a little loose.

Main event tease

Well I'm still alive in the WSOP main event. I am playing again on Friday and have 132,400 chips with the average being about 90,000 I think; so I'm in decent shape, especially with the blinds being at 600-1200-100 when we go back.

Other Irish players still in are Marty, Nicky Power, Andy Black, Albert and Big Mick G. I'm sure there are others but they're the only ones I can really think of at the moment.

Getting owned by Vegas

01 July 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

Since my last post where I talked about the $5k n $10k PLO tourneys I have played a $300, $500 in the Venetian and a $1500 WSOP event.

I cashed in the $300 even earning a cool $550 after wading through a field of over 900 morons. I finished 82nd in the $500 with 62 making the money from a field of 700 odd morons and then in the WSOP event there was 3000 complete morons and I managed to finish 390th with 300 making the money.

Normal Stuff from Vegas

Well I arrived in Vegas on Monday 15th late at night. I'm staying at Extended Stay America Apartments, which are a barely a five minute walk from The Rio. For anyone coming to Vegas for the WSOP I'd really recommend this hotel.

They're pretty cheap ($50 a night I think) and I'm really liking the fact that I don't have to walk through a depressing casino floor to get to/from my room. At the moment I'm on my own - which I'm kind of liking, but I think John might be crashing in with me indefinitely tomorrow because Big Mick G got here yesterday and I think he's going to take John's bed. To be fair with a name like 'Big Mick G', you can't be expected to be going around sleeping on couches for too long now can you!

PLO Hand Analysis

10 June 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

Sorry it has been so long since my last PLO Hand Analysis. I gave a few reasons in my last post as to why I haven't been blogging nearly as much as I should be, but doing blogs on PLO Hand Analysis is harder than the average post.

I've found it hard to find hands that I think are well suited to being broken down; since it is the decision-making process (in both my head and that of my opponent), which I am interested in explaining to you guys. Also Andy Ward's PLO quest has been going on, so I didn't want to intrude since it seems to be a really excellent project for him and any aspiring PLO players.

Welcome Back Rory

So it's been about a month since my last post, which ironically was about being professional in poker.

I'm not saying I have taken a month off or anything, but for a variety of reasons I probably haven't played as much as I think I should and I certainly haven't been doing enough blogging.

Professional Much???

07 May 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

Sometimes I feel guilty when I think I haven't played enough poker. I think it's because I worry that in a few years the games could be much tougher and I won't be able to make the sort of money (which is pretty sick for someone my age) as I do now.

A PLO Hand Breakdown

28 April 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

In this post I'm going to review a PLO hand I played recently on Boylepoker.com and if it goes down well, then I'll keep doing them. I might also do some HU PLO hands or NL Tournament hands.

Every Cloud....

15 April 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

Hey there. Well as we said last year after the Irish Open - there's always next year. It was a disgusting performance from more or less everyone I know. I don't think anyone I know made it even close to day two.

As far as my tournament went, I got a semi-tough table, with Channing to my immediate left of course. He seemed determined to ruin my day by either calling or reraising every time I entered a pot. For this reason, I just decided to rock it up and play honestly. My patience was rewarded at the 200-400 level where I was able to get my 15k in preflop with AA vs. QQ. I was drawing fully dead by the turn, HORSEPISS.

The Time is Now

Firstly I have to congratulate my good friend Eoghan O'Dea for yet another deep run in a big buy-in online tournament. He finished 5th in the SCOOP $3k event for $156k after winning the ECOOP main event and coming 2nd in the Pokermillion (even though this isn't a tournament and it has a worse structure than a $5 Sit 'n' Go).

...But if they did it, they would have next to no interest in my good self.

How's things degens? As always I shall start this post saying "Ah ye it's been a while and I'm going to try to update more often in the future etc etc". I genuinely am this time, since there's a fair bit going on recently and lots of stuff coming up.

Been a while

07 March 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

Hey guys, it's been a while since my last post, but with the Multiplier and all the other loudmouths that are now with Boyles it's pretty hard for me to get a word in.

There hasn't been too much to write about really. Since I've been home I've just been working hard on my personal fitness, running and gyming it everyday. I also saw a dietician to try and start eating a bit better.

OMFFFFFFFFFFFGG!!

18 February 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

Frustration is the word of the week folks. Since Monday I've dropped back about a quarter of what I have won over the past 2 weeks (which was a fair bit). I know this isn't much of a swing, but they're big enough sums and I despise losing money - who doesn't right?

Reesy on Tour

10 February 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

Manila is bit more like Bangkok, except not as polluted and just milder in general, but it was much poorer and less developed than I had expected. Conversely though, our hotel (The Dusit Thani) was pretty solid. Vesty, John and I enjoyed probably the best buffet I've ever had. There was a lovely Italian (yes restaurant), a very good gym, nice rooms and sickeningly polite staff - they actually made me feel bad, they're so polite and nice! So basically if you're in Manila, stay there.

Travels

09 February 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

What's up sickos? Been a while since my last post... been meaning to do it for ages but...well I don't have a decent excuse apart from that whenever I'm at my laptop I can't resist opening up poker sites and getting extremely busy and then I never have the energy or interest in doing it after a long session. God, that's such a weak excuse considering I have no real responsibility whatsoever.

Anyway, as some of you will know I have been away for the past five weeks or so on a holiday slash tournament trail type buzz; although whenever I'm filling in my customs forms I always put "Work" or "Business" as my reason for visiting. I think it's because it makes me feel important and professional. I am neither, sigh.

Final Table and HU...

28 January 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

Okay I'm definitely finishing the IPC on this entry, I promise! Before I do that I'd just like to congratulate Flipper on winning the CPT event, well done buddy.

So, to continue from my last post. The situation was nine handed and we had to lose one more player before the final table. Unfortunately, we lost Rory Liffey after his KK got done by JJ in pretty brutal flushing fashion; poker can be cruel but gg Rory. Also, gg Rory Brown who had a great tournament and got unlucky to finish in 10th, well done and well played.

IPC Galway Day 3

25 January 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

So I came back with a decent, but not a huge stack by any means. Day 3 went really well considering I had a couple of really big hands and then they allowed me to make a lot of steals and also put in a few re-steals on people.

IPC Galway Day 2

19 January 2009 | Category: by: Rory Rees Brennan

Welcome back guys. I arrived in Melbourne yesterday. I didn't find the journey too bad at all; I think people build it up a bit too much for my liking. My advice is just don't sleep the night before you go and you'll end up sleeping for half of it anyway. Also I'd definitely recommend Singapore Airlines for anyone going that way!

Well it's been a while coming...but I have finally started my blog (regretting it already). However, in light of recent events, and also because of my plans for the next few weeks (tournaments at the Aussie Millions and the APT Manila), I think that the timing is pretty ideal. To those of you that say I refused to start a blog until a major score I say....well observed.

Anyhow, I would firstly just like to thank Boylepoker for hosting this blog and also for their sponsorship; they have a great team behind them and it seems basically all you have to do is lash on some Boyles' gear and tournaments basically beg you to win them!
