Andy Ward - Omaha tips (Part 4)

As we get deeper into the tournament and the blinds go up, there's less room for multi-street play and, like in any poker tournament really, hand selection and being the aggressor becomes more important.

The next hand we're looking at, the blinds were 80-160 and I picked up Kd Ts 7d 6s third to speak. UTG limped, pot raised to 720, and it was folded around to the limper who called. The flop came Td 8c 2h, he checked, I bet the pot and he folded.

Andy: When I drop below 30BB, I'm looking for hands with a lot of potential that I can open-raise with and commit when I like the flop. It doesn't have to be nut potential. My stack is a little bit high in this hand (it works better with 20BB) but this is exactly the kind of hand I'm looking for - four live cards, double suited, some straight potential.

The flop gives me top pair, a gutshot and a backdoor flush draw; this is plenty of help and I'm looking to commit here, but in the event he folds anyway. What do you think of this plan overall for playing a shorter stack?

Dave: Your stack's probably still a bit high but seems reasonable enough. There's not really any panic considering there are no antes in Omaha but I'm never gonna argue with punting for a double up with a double suited hand.

Marty: Absolutely fine I think, and if I get raised pre-flop, then I call and am all in on the flop, unless I'm pretty sure that I'm drawing near dead (like A23 rainbow or something).

Andy: I did forget to point out that, as Marty says, if I get re-raised pre-flop then I will easily have odds to at least call. I might prefer to put the rest in pre-flop, just in case he has like JT98 and bluffs us out on an A22 flop which would be a disaster :-)
