Andy Ward - Omaha tips (Part 5)

30 May 2009 | Category: by: Andy Ward

In the last hand we're going to look at this week, we're down to 20BBs when we find a playable hand in a raised pot and have to choose between calling and re-raising to commit. With a 12.5k stack and 300-600 blinds, I picked up 9s 8d 6h 5h in third position.

UTG, who started the hand with 10K, opened the pot to 2100. I decided to re-raise the pot, a 7k stack behind me called the re-raise and the original raiser also called, leaving only 3k behind. The flop came 9h 6c 5c so the rest went in. UTG had A532 with hearts, the caller behind had AKKT with clubs, and I filled up on the river to triple up.

Andy: I decided to re-raise to represent AA and maybe make the opener pass some KK/QQ type hands (if he's any good, a lot of people will just plough it in anyway). If I get called by AA I'm practically flipping. The worry is that he might call with something like QJ98, but I think that's unlikely enough to take a chance on. What do you think? Do you prefer to just call and let it go on a bad flop?

Marty: I'd prefer to call because I don't trust people to pass hands pre-flop in omaha (as illustrated by the guy behind you who calls with KK). You have position on him and I'd rather see a flop and commit if it suits in any reasonable way. Obviously if I just call his raise and then someone behinds sticks it in, then I'm gonna gamble.

Dave: From what I gather this is how you play holdem and you seem to do quite well so I'm not gonna discourage it. I'd consider it a bit too weak to be re-raising especially with the gap in the middle and not being double suited. If there were 10 good omaha tournies a night I'd probably be all for it though. Will be interested to see how you get on carrying this strategy over.

Andy: I think Marty's point is a good one in that while people ought to pass KKxx and QQxx, in practice they probably won't and our hand is better suited to taking a flop and then deciding what to do than the overpair hands, which will pretty much see five cards whatever happens. It is indeed how I play holdem, pretty much, in my defence I'm not the only one :-)

It certainly will be interesting to see how I do in the ECOOP tournaments, and I'll keep you posted. I'm sure I have a better chance thanks to Dave's and Marty's advice, so thanks very much to them. I'll stand you a pint if I win the $150K guaranteed :-)

Thanks for these hands lads. They've made a good read. It seems to me the overwhelming advice is not to get carried away preflop in Omaha.
