This time last year I wrote a blog in which I mentioned some aims for the year ahead. I don't generally like to do that and when I do, I always try to set the bar pretty low to avoid disappointment.
I can't remember exactly what I said I'd liked to have achieved last year, but I'm pretty sure I failed miserably at everything. So this year I'm not going to do that.
Nicky Power said in his blog that really his only aim for the year was to make more money than he would be making if he was working for a living, and my thinking for the year ahead is something along the same lines. Obviously I'd like to win a tournament and make a couple of final tables, but I'll be fairly happy if at the end of 2010, I've made more than I've spent over the year and have a bit more money in the bank.
2009 was definitely the worst year I've ever had poker-wise, and there were a few times over the year when I was on the verge of getting out the job-finder. Thankfully it hasn't come to that though, and I actually had a reasonable end to the year with a couple of decent results. I suppose one good thing to come out of it, is that it can only get better and I don't feel like I have as much pressure on me as I did this time last year.
My first event of the year is going to be the Aussie Millions. I didn't have much success at this tourney last time, playing 5 or 6 events without cashing, so it shouldn't be too hard to improve. That said, I'm only going to play 2 or 3 tournaments this year and concentrate more on cash games.
The games are pretty tough during the day, but after midnight there seems to be a lot of value around. I haven't played much since I got here, but I'm ahead a few k so far, and I'll be pretty disappointed if I don't return home with a good profit from the trip.
I'm going to Sydney now for a couple of days to meet up with Neil Channing and a couple of friends who are over here travelling. After that, I'm going to put in a pretty solid session of poker over the week, then hopefully head to one of the islands off the coast to do a bit of diving for a few days before I go home.
Ideally I'd like to stay over here for a bit longer and travel a little, at least until the temperature in Ireland gets back into positive numbers, but we've got a friend's wedding to attend at the start of February and hopefully we're going to have a lengthy holiday later in the year after we get married.
I'll be sending updates from the main event and any side event's that I play via Twitter again, as it will be another while before I have the website up and running.
