Back In Business

I'm just back from a few months in Oz and Asia. Since my last blog post, I took a month off in America and came home in September fresh and ready to go. I opened my new Boylepoker account and bang straight away won the $500 high roller for $16k, which was the last iPoker nightly guarantee I had yet to win in 2008.

The week after that I came second in the $100 rb for another $10kish and ended up fting this one 3 times in 5 attempts. I moved back in to cash and continued to run like our lord above, as I generally do. For the first time I was having some small joy short stacking 50/100, thanks to a few massive fish knocking around Boylepoker. Then, unfortunately everything went to sh1te.

I could discuss a couple of factors which led to this slump, but I am not going to talk about my major leaks, when the water is still pumping out of the pipes. I was running bad, playing worse and going out too much! The rapidly closing Irish winter only added to my ever-deepening depression.

So I finally packed my bags and took myself off to Oz. For the first two weeks I continued to run bad. I was at that point which every poker player has been before, when you start questioning your ability, but night is darkest just before the dawn.

To my complete joy, I went on the sickest up-swing possible for around six weeks, in which I won an ECOOP and came 5th in another, which returned just under 50k in two days. Thankfully, the cash was also flying in. However someone told me years ago when I was working in a stock brokers, that nothing rises in a straight line except for Irish banking shares, however those lads soon found out there is no exception.

I thought that I may have found one with my bank-roll after nearly six weeks of unbroken growth, but I received a similar soft landing to the Irish banks! It wasn't a great time to be running bad, as the Ozzie millions had just started.

I did my whole live role, which built up from $5k to $40k and played about 10 tournies, but there wasn't a sniff of cash anywhere. Myself and Rees went from there to Manila for an APT. My luck appeared to have changed and I had a good first day. After 3 hrs of day two, I headed the pack with 45 left and 27 for the cash.

I managed to get in with 40 left in a massive flick; if I had won this, I would have had 12.5% of the chips in play. Full sure I'd win the flip and then be a short favourite to win the tournament, the dealer pealed off the turn and river which came up blank for me. As if that wasn't bad enough, the guy who won the flick won the tourney.

I was back to the 'I hate poker' frame of mind. We got out of Manila and set ourselves up in a nice hotel in Koh Samui, Thailand. I told the lads in Boylepoker to lodge some luck in my account or else I was going to go play with the crocodiles in the near by croc farm. They kindly obliged and I had close to one of my best weeks on record!

All in all, I showed a pretty decent profit for my trip. Now I'm back to the grind in Ireland. Poker-wise, the plans are to get some good grinding done. I already have one eye on the WSOP with 5+ events planned, costing over 30k minimum, which means I need to do some serious grinding for that. With the Irish open coming up, Rees has been telling me how sick it's going to be when he wins both major tournaments in the same year.

We'll see!
