Ok, so we're 3 weeks into the Boylepoker / Boards.ie Headsup League and things are beginning to hot up a little (well lukewarm if you're in Serie A!)
With 7 weeks remaining to complete the first phase of matches, some players need to get their finger out and start playing, because it might seem a long time away, but it's really very little time.
The action so far...
Serie A
Many people's favourite for the crown, Marty Smyth, is enjoying an extended break at the moment and has yet to play. Seriously though, rumour has it he's running scared. Last I heard the $10k WSOP Omaha, Irish Open, Partypoker world open and Ladbrokes Million winner was shitting bricks at the prospect of mixing it up with the big boys of boards. Only time will tell on that one!
The early leaders in Serie A, is boards very own superstar doke and last seasons top three finisher, Fran "Jackyback" Egan. Dara "doke" O'Kearney was crowned "Boards most improved player of 2008" in the annual poker awards. Doke also finished runner up to Marty Smyth for "Boards player of the year". He's seen off the challenge of ocallagh and dagunman so far and will no doubt add more scalps to that list. Jackyback is taking a welcome break from the variance ridden 6max Omaha he usually plays and as last season showed, his aggression carries through to his heads-up game and he's a formidable opponent.
NorwichFanRob is 1 for 1 so far, Smoothcall and ocallagh have tasted 1 victory and 1 defeat in their opening 2 games. HiCloy has bitten the dust twice and Dagunman will be itching to get his first win under his belt, so I expect tough games for whoever he plays next.
Marty isn't the only person yet to get his feet wet. Daithio (my favourite for the title), DeVore (the defending champion). phantom_lord (online cashgame specialist) BigToad (ehhh large green froggy bloke) dannydiamond (looking for a hall pass from the missus to play) and [nicK] have 7 weeks to squeeze in 10 games. It's easier said than done, so all you need to get a move on.
Let's hope we can improve on a paltry 8 matches so far for the next update!
Serie BA
There are a lot of equally matched players in this league and I expect this one to go right to the wire. The individual "Boards.ie HeadsUp champion" leads the way in Serie BA. White Knight is almost in the clubhouse having played 9 matches so far, but his early sparkling form has faltered slightly and he stands on 5 wins from 9 games played. Digiman is expected to continue his fine form and overtake White Knight for top spot having won 4 from 5. Granted he's leaving all the big boys till the end (lol), but he's one of the favourites for top honours.
Sitting in 3rd place is TommyGunne. TG is the favourite to take the Serie BA crown and with 3 wins from 5, he's heading in the right direction. Hot on their heels are Macspower, Wolves, the dashing Flushdraw and ZZR1100 all with 2 wins so far.
HectorJelly has played just the one game so far, a fine victory over White Knight. HJ has to settle for the tag of 2nd favourite this time around. The "pokerswat" pro has made over 10 videos for "pokerswat" and these have included HU tutorials. His opponents are swatting over these and have formed a cunning plan to play HJ at his own game. Could the students become the master?
Columbian drug lord Tony_Montan and our only female player, one ill cat have 1 win each. thebutpeddler, thechamp87 and Boards Series of online poker champ strewelpeter have yet to get off the mark.
While aidankk is waiting in the wings to play his first match.
Serie BB
There's been a bit of a lull in Serie BB in the last week or so, with no games being played. This league is so open, that anyone can put a couple of wins together and climb to the top.
The top spot is the resting place for The Improver at the moment. A 60% winrate leaves him 2 points clear of enzo scifo, bohsman and bottom feeder. Scifo having 2 wins from 2, with bohsman and bottom feeder suffering 1 defeat apiece.
Pokermod Ste05 is 1 for 1 and will no doubt ban some of his fellow contenders from boards close to deadline, so I suggest you play him quick! He's in a pack of 4 players on 1 victory. These include Warper, Connie147 and Chucky the tree. A victory for any of these players will see them climb to joint 2nd spot, so expect a spate of games in the near future as players battle for position.
Dead Parrot seems to have fallen off his perch and has yet to start. Carfax and Imposter have yet to post a victory and what can we say about poor Meatman 007..4 games, 4 defeats. Things can only get better, hopefully he won't lose hope. 4 wins from his remaining 6 matches will leave him in a good spot going into the next phase of the league.
Serie C
If we thought Serie A were dragging their heels, spare a thought for Serie C. where only 7 matches have been played and it's moving at snail pace!
Leading the snail race is gkenny with 2 wins from 2. gkenny can be found sitting at the specialised headsup tables on most days awaiting a game! Also on 4 points are tipp86 and Lao Lao. Both have won 2 and lost 1 and are in good positions to make the money.
The only other person in Serie C to have points on the board is pierce hard with a win to go along with defeat.
cooker3, dvdfan and The Tourist are on the scared island with the other lads and have yet to sample the delights of headsup against their fellow contenders. With over $1k for 1st prize, I don't expect them to stay on the island long!
ITT-Pat, shano_88 and babymaker6 are all having a bagul party and should join us on the leaderboard soon.
Serie D
This is one of the most fascinating leagues. The only league where every player has played with each player eagerly trying to make the money and claim a nice bankroll booster.
Very few favourites in this league and some close matches that could have went either way. 3 players lead the way at the moment with 3 wins each. max power, conbro and aya14 have all tasted victory 3 times and all hoping to continue a good run and steamroll any remaining players that get in their way! Expect 1, 2 or all 3 of these players to be up near the business end when the prizes are being dished out.
If any of the top 3 slip up, there's a hungry chasing pack behind, hoping to use them as a stepping stone to get into the money spots. Joecliff and pkaces each have 2 wins with pistolpeter, northwestguy27 and dangerousdavid hungry for victory after a single win from 2, 3 and 4 games respectively.
permierstone and zuroph are battling it out for wooden spoon honours. Five defeats between them means that they need to pick up a win to move up the leaderboard and leave the other bringing up the rear. It's early days yet, so a nice winning streak can change all that.
I'll update the blog regularly to keep players and well wishers informed off all the happenings in the Boylepoker HeadsUp League!
