Before I won the Omaha, for the most part I'd actually been really enjoying playing poker on this trip. I was looking forward to the Main Event and felt like I could do well in it this year. Even if I busted out I was intending to stay until the end and play cash games, as although I hadn't played a lot, I'd won in all the three sessions I had played.
After I won the Omaha though, I pretty much lost all interest in playing anymore. There didn't seem much point in playing a $10-25 or $25-50 cash game, as the amounts that I could win really wouldn't have made a lot of difference to the overall trip, and I wasn't going to jump into a $100-200 game just because I had a few quid. I wasn't even bothered about playing the Main Event, although obviously I knew that I had to give it a go. I decided to play Day 1A - partly because I'd been too hung over to drink the night before (which was the day after the Omaha), so I'd managed to get an earlyish night, and partly because I wanted to learn my fate early so that if I busted I could change my flights.
I'm still totally happy that I gave the Main Event 100%, but at the same time I knew that I wouldn't have been disappointed at all if I busted early. Maybe this lack of pressure helped me as I found I was able to play more freely than I had been able to in previous years. I was reasonably active early, winning and losing a few small pots, and then winning two decent pots, one with a flopped set with which I extracted about 5k, and the other with AA v QQ for about the same amount.
By the dinner break I had almost 40k which was a nice stack at the time. I felt I had a pretty good table and knew where I was with all the players except for one young Scandinavian guy, who I realised early on was a class act. He was pretty much bossing the table and I reasoned it made more sense to let him have his way since there seemed to be enough value at the table for both of us. I didn't play any huge hands after dinner and I managed to finish the day on 60k which looked like it would be about 1.5 times the average.
With day one complete and a break before day 2, what was I to do in Vegas? Drinking and interviews. Tomorrow I'll let you know what happens when the two are mixed...
