WSOP Fantasy League, some advice

29 April 2010 | Category: by: Paul Spillane

I'm not a big one for fantasy teams/leagues but I always look forward to this time of year when a lot of poker sites offer prizes for punters who can predict bracelet winners.

I've had a modicum of success at it in the past, so obviously my ego ran out of control and now I think I can dispense some advice.

I put up some picks and a few nuggets that I've picked up over the years, hope it helps. Have fun with the Boyle's mini leagues and outright fantasy league and good luck.

Rule 1 - Pick Phil Ivey
The best player in the world, won 2 bracelets last year and made main event final table. Reputedly has over seven million dollars in side bets that he can win more bracelets this year, is a master of all games, feared by everyone, has 7 bracelets in the bag already and I could go on.
Paul's Pick 1: Phil Ivey

Rule 2 - Pick players that can play the mixed games
Picking hold-em winners in this day and age is just too darn tough, so players that can play mixed games as well as hold'em, have a big advantage. For this reason I'm picking a triple bracelet winner from last year.
Paul's Pick 2: Jeff Lisandro

Rule 3 - Avoid non-bracelet winners
This doesn't mean they can't play but I prefer a horse that has gone the course and distance, rather than someone who hasn't won for whatever reason (interest waning during series, rubbish at heads, goes skint). Swerve Antonius, Hansen and Bloch and pick a pedigreed winner.
Paul's Pick 3: Allen Cunningham

Rule 4 - Target sponsored pros
Simple economics, it's worth money to the big 2 poker room's players. The poker rooms can advertise winning players all over the TV and more often than not the sponsored pro's are sponsored because they are very good players. These lucky few can play as many events as they like as someone else is picking up the tab, add in a little ego for motivation, even the odd side bet and you get.
Paul's Pick 4: Daniel Negreanu

Rule 5 - Look for players others won't pick
This wild card rule means the previous four rules can be ignored and give yourself the thrill of picking a player no one else either fancies or has heard off. So many to choose from but I went for non sponsored internet legend who I see playing all the mixed games as well as hold-em online.
Paul's Pick 5: Jon 'Pearljammer' Turner
