Last week I managed to blag my way onto Sky Poker’s TV show - The Club. They had innocently emailed looking to get in touch with the champ (not me the other one - Marty), but were foolish enough to put a phone number in the signature of the email. I called and was able to convince the producers that it was imperative they had an IPO segment on the show!
So I set off on Tuesday night in order to be fresh for my TV debut (well my first role that didn’t involve me walking behind a news reporter while they were filming) the following day. I landed at about 10:30pm and was ready to go straight to bed when Marty rang me and asked if I wanted to grab a pint or two so we could discuss how best to answer the questions which the Sky people had been good enough to furnish us with.
I met Marty in the Empire casino and we set to getting our heads around the answers (obviously trying to make ourselves look as witty and charming as we possibly could). After 6 or 7 beers, a delicious Thai meal and the service of a Polish cross between Mrs Doyle and a Furby we were shocked to find that it was 2:30am and we were going to be missing out on several hours of much needed beauty sleep!
I was woken at 8am the morning of the recording by a pre PM Paul Spillane (definitely not as friendly as the Post PM Paul Spillane) who wanted to go through the questions with me too. After a cranky debate I set off to the studios with three different sets of answers to the questions flowing around my head, but I felt surprisingly fresh and was confident that I could handle myself in an appropriate manner, thus showing both the company and myself in a good light.
On arrival at the studios I was straight into make up and after 15 minutes of application of industrial strength foundation I no longer resembled an extra from Thriller and was deemed fit to enter the TV studio.
Now for those who aren’t familiar with the show it is filmed in a virtual studio which means that everything is green and they put in the background afterwards. Before filming, myself and Marty sat with the two presenters chatting joking which left me feeling calm and composed up until the magic word “action” was called out and I managed to turn into a complete sweating mess!
Marty being the true champion of any situation flowed through the whole thing without a care. Anytime I was asked a question I just froze, with three sets of answers randomly bouncing around my head, and jabbered on more like a representative of Stutters Anonymous than the Boylepoker ambassador!
If you want to see me turn into a snivelling mess tune into SKY channel 865 tonight @ 8:30pm.
