I was at the Rio yesterday and thought to myself, If someone offered me a million dollars I wouldn't let a big burly man rub his hands all over my podgy white body, but strangely enough here I was allowing that very thing to happen and paying for the privilege.
As you approach the Amazon room where all the WSOP action takes place there are about 20 or so masseurs all charging between $10 and $100 for a stress relieving massage. I approached a very cute looking young lady who was smiling at me seductively and requested a massage. I handed over my $20 took my seat and waited to be 'stress free'.
I was surprised at the strength of her hands as she kneaded my shoulder blades and even more surprised when her testosterone fuelled voice growled and asked me if I was having a good day in Vegas. Claiming my phone was ringing I look up to be greeted not by the girl I had asked for the massage but by a man weighing in at approx 32 stone. His name was George. Vegas even uses the honey trap for a $20 massage, be warned.
Feeling relatively stress free (though still a little shocked) I wandered around the lifestyle show for about the 5th time looking for inspiration.
Many of the big poker sites sign up top online pro's to promote their site and obviously the more well known the player the more chance he will be signed up. (Not so for women, where looks often factor as prominently if not more so, than playing ability). Anyway I was wandering past the Pokerstars lounge and saw Humberto Brenes grinning like a cat who got the cream and no wonder. When I used to play against him many moons ago he was an example of a quiet, polite and tight professional player but since TV raised poker's profile he started to act like a complete pudding anytime there was a camera near him.
All this ended up with him annoying the hell out of 99% of his opponents, acting like a buffoon and slowing the game so badly that often the clock was permanently called on him. Fast forward a few years and he's signing autographs, posing for pictures and kissing babies without a care in the world as Pokerstars probably pick up his WSOP tab.
It just made me realise once again what a blessing it is to have Marty as an example of what we are trying to achieve. Hard working, successful, modest and respectful, you won't find a more liked or respected payer in the game at the moment. Add into the mix he always stands his round at the bar and you have just about the complete package.
