Grinding it out

19 January 2010 | Category: by: Peter Murphy

Another week of grinding it out. I played about 8k hands in the past seven days, including the weekend where I played very little due to too much sport on TV. I fancied a bit of time to relax away from the computer.

Half way through the month now and I am still off the drink and cigarettes and I am winning consistently, so all is going well.

I have been playing mostly 2-4 and 3-6 and some 2-5 stg games, which seem to attract a lot of fishy players. I also played some 5-10 when I found decent games and have run pretty well on them.

I did manage to lose nearly $3k one day, due to getting seriously outdrawn and losing some big flips. I played a few tourneys during the week as well and probably broke even on them, my biggest cash coming with a second for $1,200

I ended the week just short of $27k, which is slightly less than my target but with two weeks left, I have still got a shot of making the $40k target. I just have to make $6.5k a week now instead of $6k, which is very possible if I can run well and use good game selection.

I think game selection is the most important thing for anyone who is trying to make a living at cash. I don't understand these big ego guys who want to play the best players to prove they can beat them. Personally, I would rather play in a game I know I can win for a good hourly rate and keep moving up the levels slowly.

I have a good list of buddies now that I always look for when I log on and I try to get seats at their games first. After that I would have a look through the tables and see which tables have the highest percentage of people who see the flop and then try to get into those games also.

This might seem very basic to some people but I know people who still log on and click "first available seat at such a limit", which makes no sense at all. Spending five or 10 minutes selecting your tables can be the difference between being a winning player and a losing player.

Here is a screen shot of my balance, just cause I am pretty chuffed to get it to this in the last few weeks!!

I will be grinding solidly for the next two weeks and I might head to the coursing festival on the January 31, as I've heard before that the cash games are supposed to be very good there and my month off the drink will come to an abrupt end.
