How is Pete getting on?

29 January 2009 | Category: by: Peter Murphy

Well it's been a very rough few days, I started to play around midnight on Monday night on the 5c 10c tables and to say I ran badly is a massive understatement. There's three hands which really stick in my head, the first one is pretty horrible, where I flop the nut house after raising pre-flop wit 58dd and got it in v 2 opponents on an 885 board with two hearts. One guy had K7hh and the other guy had A8cc, which obviously bings the Ace on the river. I can't find the hand history for this hand, but I think it was close to $30 or 3 BI in the pot.

After that hand I had a feeling it was not going to be my night. This other very sick, sick hand came up:

This was pot was for over 5 Buyins at this level, which is massive and to hit runner runner house v my set, is just not what I needed at this time. Later in the night, I had set over set and he rivered quads for another 2 Buyin Pot. I played a few STTS, in which I was having little or no success in either. I played through till about midday which was a long 12 hour session and I ended up wit about $130 dollars in the account. I am finding this challenge very difficult indeed, I don't think I have adjusted properly to these new limits and but I'm going to have to very soon or else I will never be able to move up the levels.

So after getting up to 10c20 and running bad there, I am now back to where I started at 2c4c, this has been very disheartening, as I was very confident after my MTT success, but now I get the feeling I will never get there.

On Tuesday, I took the night off, as I was playing a live game, but I played for about an hour before I went to bed. I decided to play some HU cash and a few STTS, I managed to bust out of the STTS, but I found a donk heads up to play. I 4 bet him wit JJ and he calls. Then he called a bet on the flop with a gutshot, I turn a set completely his straight and that was that. I reload and 3 bet him wit AJdd and get it in on a J hi flop v his Q9. Again he hits the Q and I decided enough was enough, and it was time for bed with $100 left in the account. Back to square one :(

This is turning into a BadBeat thread, but it is just sick how bad I am running. On Tuesday night I decide to start off with a few STTs and a couple of 2c4c cash games. I got off to a good start in the STTS, but that run dried off after about 10 of them but I think I had made a little profit on them. The cash was going alright, until the early hours of the morning, when I had KK busted by AK and then I went to spew mode rising and re raising most hands and I managed to donk off a few BuyIns.

My total balance is now $78.01 and I am really starting to doubt myself over completing this challenge. I have been playing nearly 10 hours a day since I started and I have absolutely nothing to show for it, which is hugely disappointing for me. I don't know what I am doing wrong, maybe it's just that the pots seem pretty worthless, but I should not be thinking that way at all, I should be thinking of them as Big Blinds and not in their monetary value.

I've got to try a different approach to the cash, I think. I have to really tighten up my range and try not to get people to fold hands, when they should be folding, but just play basic strategy. I hope to bring better news next time around. Again thanks to everyone who has been wishing me luck, not that I seem to be getting much of it lately though!!

Don't lose heart, Pete. Just play solid values, don't bluff and grind out the lower levels. You'll probably find it easier once you get out of the micros. Good luck!

its fixed murph...
it may be done on live tables but not on-line...
what you think, there too many bad beats for my liking
u just dont see beats like it live do ya???

them micro stakes can break your heart lad,but perhaps try and buy in for 50 bb,(say $5 in 5/10 cent game)play two tables if your b/r allows it,play solid as a rock,(dont be afraid to stick it all in preflop with big holdings in one move, you will get called with all types of rubbish) in these games your fold equity is more or less zero so very few will lay down a hand,if and when you double up to $10....leave and start again with $5 and try and do the same again, dont know if this helps sir,but good luck to ya boss :)

you will come good ...all you need is a wee run of 'luck' along with that 'in the zone' feel and wham !!
you will wonder why you ever doubted it :-)

keep d chin up n battle on, d bad beats will pass n not b so regular hopefully, u'l do it yet GoD.. gud luck

" What would Jigs do???? "

Keep her lit feinhorse!!!! I think your going the right way in a change of strategy, I aint a good player and I know that when I'm playing in a low stakes game I call the majority of raises with hands I would normally fold in decent stake games.

Keep the chin up. Low stakes games you will always get called to the river so maybe a different strategy will serve you better there. SnG's might make you a few quick bucks. Best of luck with your challenge.

Come on Pete get back in the game! Always remember there's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, it's probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on ... shame on you. It fool me. We can't get fooled again."

pete,i think its time ya called in amy the guttshotter,or me your apprentice,

tilted a bit myself Mr Murphy in my 'joint challenge with you'

had AA v KK and KK v QQ in cash games and have dropped to £420 odd
