'Murphy's Multiplier'

Donal O'Connor from PokerSwat phoned me with an idea about 10 days ago and now it's live, 'Murphy's Multiplier'.

The proposal was simple, would we be prepared to put up a prize if Peter Murphy could turn $100 into $10,000 in a set time?

I'd met Peter a few times this year, chiefly at the IPO where he final tabled and more memorably at the Brucepoker festival where I have never met a man so drunk yet unable to fall over. Of course, though I had met him a few times I had been closely following his progress and like Donal I was and am of the opinion that Mr. Murphy is one hell of a talented poker player. I think his record in 2008 is phenomenal.

2008 European Deepstack Drogheda - 10th - €3,200 (150 players).
2008 Macau Irish Classic Poker Festival - 12th - €3,500 (169 players).
2008 Boylepoker IPO - 4th - €13,00 (1,300 players)
2008 Irish Winter Festival - 5th - €48,700 (423 players ).

He also played in the first ever WSOPE in London finishing 52nd out of 362 in a very tough field, falling a little short of the money.

He started the year off in Galway at the 2009 IPC with a 7th place finish for €12,500 in a field of 255 players.

Now the money may not be mind blowing but the consistency is. These are big fields and lots of excellent players have played in them without anywhere near that success.

We hastily organised a meeting to discuss the project; an eleven-week timeline was set, (we have incentivised Peter; it's up to him if he wants to make that public). Peter has committed to writing about the experience and posting his stats both on Boylepoker's blog and Pokerswat's blog.

At the meeting I asked him what price he made himself, his answer shocked me more than the news Robbie Williams had left Take That. After our meeting this week he wasn't as bullish and now rates himself a big odds against. I actually think he's not being fair on himself, just because the general reaction is, like mine was, he won't make it, doesn't mean he won't. Also, Pete subsequently explained to me how he had turned $50 into $30,000 online and I have become more convinced.

I know we could have done a million things differently with this promotion but we didn't. We heard the idea, liked it and stuck it up on the site within two weeks. We will listen to views on whether the idea was good or bad on our comments section and forums and like all ideas/projects/promotions look to improve them.

I for one am fascinated to see if he achieves it, I really hope he does. He has been asked to be as honest as he likes with regards to Boylepoker's promotions, VIP schemes, freerolls bonuses etc; it's a good way for us to learn also.

Recently on a forum I saw the question posed how does the promotion benefit Boylepoker's customers. I figure it depends which way you look at it. Not all promotions, like this idea, the blog, the IPO etc benefit our players exclusively or do they put money into their account, it does though benefit those who may want to get an insight into bankroll management; Peter's style of play and of course if he offers us any advice as a site, we will happily listen.

At our meeting yesterday we also discussed the next zany idea he may attempt. If you have an idea let us know, who knows it could be you next!
